Look at her face. The confusion, pain and anguish are present on her face. The delicate lines of a woman that is pure, loving and moral. She is beautiful and elegant. Some may say that they way Caravaggio painted her was angelic. However, the detail is taken out of context. Look what she is doing. Now, in the true meaning of the story she is still quite the just woman, but lets keep looking at this without the intended story and through the 21st century view. Judith is a woman whom for all intents and purposes is an angel, yet her dead is devilish.
Many women have seen this as a powerful symbol of female power and ability to take command and have the strength to overcome physical strength. It can be that as well. Please notice I am leaving out the original meaning to pursue my own needs of interpretation.
Time and again, I hear this comment. You look like and angel but you are the devil. This is usually after a great time of sex and mischievous fun. Upon looking at my creamy white and feeling my soft lips you would think I am an angel. I will paralyze you with pleasure, again, an angel. But then you do something to me, anything really, and you provoke the inner demon. My devilish lust takes over if you slap my ass or my face. Tie me up and you will find more of a fiend. However, you will not ever escape the dichotomy of me. You will always see and feel the angel and the devil, just like we see in Caravaggio's Judith.

Caravaggio!!! Yes! One of the pantheon of the gods of art--my hero, the greatest painter of the late Renascence--And Artemesia Gentileschi too who took the lessons she learned from Michelangelo de Merisi and brought them to fruition. Gods, what painters! The light, the use of light like no on ever before had used and painting from life both of them. I've have just had a mental orgasm lol looking at Judith--his and her paintings resonate in my soul, are of and in and part of my life, loves, heart and soul. Thank you Lady D. You are one classy woman. Yum on my yes you are!!!
Beau in ecstacy
No she is not an angel she is utterly conflicted by what she is doing, hints of fear, doubt, worry cloud her face and her soul. He captured her not as an angel by as a woman in turmoil. I adore that painting. As I do all of his.
Thank you, darlin' for this gift today ;-)

I would love sitting over a glass or three of your choice and discussing art and beauty and tats and life and love and women and men and sexuality and everything under the sun. Wow what a conversation that would be :-)

Caravaggio is amazing. This post definitely made me think about art in a different sexual lense. Very interesting.
Athena,
Fabulous! Anything I can do to combine my two favorite subjects and share that with other people makes me a very happy blogger.

Fantastic post! I think Caravaggio captured a profound difference in men and women. I imagine a man in the same position would be screaming as the veins bulged in his face, while Judith is absolutely beautiful.
Librarian,
Isn't she?!?!

Fascinating post. The amibiguity, and multifoliate nature of the psyche are perfectly reflected here. Of course we're evil and good. Of course we act from love, as well as selfishness. I pity those that claim exclusivity on either extreme. Wonderful post.
M. Sade,
The elegance in your response reflects well upon your namesake. We beings are dichotomous creatures always looking for the answer, but maybe that is not what we should be looking for.
